Powell tattles, throws Rice off game
We may just yet hear Colin Powell's perspective on the Bush's Administration's call to war, as he appears to be ready and willing to throw off Condoleeza's game. Powell's claim that the administration ignored his advice to send in more troops, as he did not believe we had enough for an exit strategy, prevented Rice from her usual pro-war double speak in interviews Sunday. She was able to at least confirm that Powell's version of the events is something that she does not "remember specifically."
While I'm not sure exactly how more of our troops would have made the Iraqi people less likely to join the insurgency (thereby speeding our exit), other than by enabling us to kill more of them, I am heartened by Powell's new-found willingness to voice dissent, albeit 4ish years later, against the Administration, which he has until now been so loyal to. Perhaps we will learn more of the "decisions" leading up to war from him in the future, or perhaps this will be the one stick in an otherwise entirely boring relationship between Powell and the Bush Administration.
In any event, I'm not sure how much screwing with Rice's PR mission really accomplishes, other than flustering the image of an already flustered White House. Was that Powell's plan? Did he want the Bush Administration to look more and more like it made a mistake with Iraq? Was he just making sure we all knew it wasn't his fault? Or, did he decide to jump on the retired generals' band wagon? Maybe it was little bit of all three... though I don't think anyone would have pointed to Powell first in a Who's-to-blame-for-the-mess-of-a-'war'-we've-
got-going-in-Iraq game.
Well, regardless of why he did it or what it will accomplish, I vote yes 'cause the more bad press the White House gets, the better Congress is looking for the Dems this year.
That is, if the republians don't succeed in entirely separating themselves from the White House. And if the Dems don't do the usual bang-up job of completely fucking up an otherwise un-losable battle.
